What Is AI Literacy, and Why Should Parents and Teachers Care?
If you've heard "AI literacy" thrown around lately and quietly wondered what it actually means beyond "kids should know about AI," you're not alone. It's a genuinely new kind of literacy, and it's worth being precise about it, because the vague version of the idea ("be careful with AI") isn't enough to actually prepare a child.
It's not just about using the tools
A child who knows how to ask ChatGPT for a good essay isn't necessarily AI literate — that's just tool proficiency, the same way knowing how to use a calculator isn't the same as understanding maths. AI literacy is closer to critical thinking applied to a specific, increasingly ubiquitous technology: understanding roughly how these systems work, what they're good at, where they confidently get things wrong, and what it means for a machine-generated answer to feel authoritative without actually being correct.
Three things every child eventually needs to understand
- •How AI decides things — that a recommendation, a generated answer, or a personalised feed is the output of a pattern learned from data, not a neutral fact or a magic answer.
- •Where AI gets it wrong — that AI can be confidently incorrect, and that checking, questioning, and verifying is a skill, not paranoia.
- •What role they want AI to play in their own thinking — using it to explore an idea versus using it to skip the thinking entirely are very different habits, and the difference compounds over years of schooling.
Why this can't just be left to schools, or just to parents
Kids use AI at home and at school, often the same day, often for the same kinds of tasks. A child who's taught healthy AI habits in the classroom but left unsupervised with a chatbot at home (or vice versa) ends up with two contradictory sets of expectations. The most credible frameworks on this topic — including the joint European Commission/OECD AI Literacy Framework — explicitly name parents and teachers as partners in the same effort, not separate tracks.
A reasonable starting point
You don't need to become an AI researcher to help a child here. A good starting habit: whenever an AI tool gives your child an answer, ask "how do you think it figured that out?" and "how would you check if that's actually right?" Those two questions, asked consistently, do more for AI literacy than any single lesson plan.
